KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed that the Pakatan Harapan government will repeal Sedition Act 1948 but stopped short of giving a time frame.
“We will first repeal the act. And for the new act, we are in the process of fine-tuning some sentences,” said Dr Mahathir at a press conference in Dewan Rakyat.
When pressed for a time frame, he said, “as soon as possible”.
The government coalition promised to do away with this archaic law in its manifesto.
The recent one-year jail sentence of independent preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin under the act has led to Pakatan Harapan Youth pressuring the government to do away with this law and a host of other related laws.[1]
