KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad vowed to put the nation on track before stepping down from his post.

He said that the last thing he wanted to do was to leave Malaysia in shambles like his predecessors.

“So, I am working hard for the country to the best of my ability. Hopefully, we’ll be able to make corrections and solve most of the inherited problems,” he said.

Mahathir said this at the 5th Bloomberg Asean Business Summit in Bangkok yesterday. The session was entitled ‘The Future of Malaysia and Asean.’

On his power transition agreement with PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the premier reiterated that he will keep to his promise and hand over power his once arch-nemesis.

Asked whether Anwar was ready for the job, Mahathir said: “It’s not a question of whether he is ready or not. I made a promise and I’ll keep my promise.”

Mahathir also dismissed notions that there will be a Cabinet reshuffle soon, saying he would only do so if there was a necessity.

“When you reshuffle the Cabinet, you cause a lot of heartaches to people; they may react in a way that is detrimental to good relations.

“I don’t casually remove people, putting in new people. I haven’t done that before and I will not do that now.

“In most countries after a change of government, there will be people thrown out, taken in. That kind of thing happens in other countries but in Malaysia, we don’t like changing ministers too often,” he said.

On his aspiration for the younger generation, Mahathir said that he hoped that they would continue working hard build Malaysia.

“They should have a love for the country and are willing to build Malaysia to become a developed country,” he said.
