COVID-19: Thailand records eight new cases

BANGKOK: Thailand has reported eight new COVID-19 cases, all Thai nationals who returned from overseas, and zero fatalities over the last 24 hours.

Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) assistant spokeswoman Dr Panprapa Yongtrakul said the new cases comprised five returnees from the United Arab Emirates, two from Kuwait and one from India.

They have been undergoing a 14-day quarantine at state quarantine facilities since their arrival in the kingdom.

Thailand has not recorded any local transmission for 13 days running, she said.

“We must not be complacent. We must continue to observe social distancing, avoid crowded places, wear mask and observe personal hygiene.

“We can only be confirmed as low risk after 28 days without local transmission,” she said at a COVID-19 daily briefing today.

Thailand has recorded 3,112 COVID-19 cases and 58 deaths since the outbreak in January.

The CCSA will introduce guidelines to ease restrictions of high-risk businesses and venues such as daycare centres and entertainment outlets under the fourth phase of relaxation.

Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) announced that seven airports in the kingdom had resumed flights yesterday.

The seven airports are Tak, Trant, Nakhon Ratchasima, Narathiwat, Pai, Phetchabun and Sukhothai.

“There will be no international passenger flights at these (seven) airports,” said CAAT director-general Chula Sukmanop.

To date, 35 airports in Thailand have resume operations for domestic flights.

CAAT has extended the ban on all international passenger arrivals to June 30 to curb the spread of COVID-19.

However, the ban does not apply to state or military aircraft, emergency landing, technical landing without disembarkation, humanitarian, medical or relief flights, repatriation flights and cargo flights.
