PUCHONG: Under Federal Constitution, all Malaysians have the right to protest peacefully and express their views, said Gombak MP Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

“There were different views from the public over the political developments last week. Rather than being sensitive about it, I strongly believe that differences of views are essential for a healthy democracy,” he said, in a statement.

Last week, several groups held protests at Dataran Merdeka after the fall of the Pakatan Harapan federal government.

Activists Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir and Datuk S Ambiga also joined one of the protests, calling for democracy to be restored in the country.

Azmin, a former minister, appreciated the fact that the police have a duty to protect the public and provide security.

“But I request the authorities to allow the public to express their views. Those who were involved in the protest should not be harassed because the public has the right to protest.

“I am referring to news reports that said that the police would investigate Marina, Ambiga and several others in relation to the public gatherings carried out recently,” he added.
