PUCHONG: Wisma Putra today issued travel advisory to Malaysians travelling to Australia as fires ravage parts of the nation Down Under.

In a statement, the government advised Malaysians to postpone their travels to areas affected by the raging fires until it subsides.

“We are issuing this advise following New South Wales’ decision to declare emergency for seven days, effective today, as the inferno ravages parts of Australia, primarily its east coast region,” the statement reads.

Wisma Putra also urged its citizens, stuck in areas affected by the fires, to prioritise their safety and adhere to the instructions given by the Australian authorities.

Australia has been fighting bushfires ravaging parts of its country since last month. The government had also drafted its military to combat the wildfires which had claimed several lives and damaged its ecosystem.

Last month, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison received a lot of criticism for taking a vacation to Hawaii during the fires, prompting the leader to cut short his leave and issue a rare public apology for being insensitive.
