PORT KLANG: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) thwarted an attempt to smuggle snake and monitor lizard skins at 0.3 nautical miles north of Sungai Chondong Besar near here, yesterday.

Selangor MMEA chief Maritime Captain Mohammad Rosli Abdullah said in the 11.45 am raid, 12 packages of snake skins, 18 packages of monitor lizard skins and 20 sacks of Extra Joss energy drink were seized.

“Through inspection, we also discovered that the boat was bringing goods with no valid documentation from the Customs Department, which include 5,040 bottles of balsam oil and 30 sacks of cinnamon. The total seizure was estimated to be worth RM479,740 including the boat,” he said in a press conference yesterday.

An Indonesian man was detained and remanded for two weeks.

The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967 for attempting to smuggle uncustomed goods, and the International Trade In Endangered Species Act 2008 for bringing scheduled species without permit.
