PUCHONG: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today denied speculation that he played a part in former Special Action Unit (UTK) officer Azilah Hadri’s recent statutory declaration (SD).
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), he also denied being the mysterious ‘VVIP’ who had met Azilah several times outside the Kajang Prison, before the SD was made public.
“The prime minister dismisses allegations that the government is behind Azilah’s accusation that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had masterminded Altantuya Shaariibuu’s murder,” reads the statement.
Few days ago, Azilah made a shocking allegation claiming that Najib had personally instructed him to eliminate Altantuya in 2006, giving him the ‘shoot to kill’ order.
Najib had since denied the allegation and vowed to challenge the claims in court. He had also announced that he would proclaim the ‘sumpah laknat’ on Friday to prove his innocence.
The Pekan MP’s lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah had alleged that a certain ‘VVIP’ had met Azilah several times before the SD was released. Some speculated that the ‘VVIP’ was Mahathir.
Touching on the matter, the PMO said they would leave the case to be handled by the court of law.
“As this involves legal process, the government will leave the matter to the relevant authorities to decide on the next course of action,” reads the statement.
In 2015, Azilah was sentenced to death, together with fellow UTK officer Sirul Azhar Umar, after losing their appeal in the Federal Court.
However, Sirul had since escaped to Australia and is currently being held at a maximum-security prison there.
