TRIPOLI: Three civilians were killed on Thursday by indiscriminate shelling that hit south of the Libyan capital Tripoli, an official said.
“Three civilians, two men and a woman, were killed later Thursday by indiscriminate shelling in Twesha area (some 40 km south of Tripoli),” the Information Advisor of the Health Ministry Amin Hashem told Xinhua news agency.
The shelling also injured several people, Hashem said, adding that “ambulances could not reach the area, as eastern-based army prevented medical team from accessing the area.”
The eastern-based army did not comment on the shelling so far.
The eastern-based army, led by General Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April in and around Tripoli, attempting to take over Tripoli and topple the rival United Nations-backed government.
Thousands of people were killed and injured in the fighting, and nearly 120,000 civilians were forced to flee their homes away from the violence.
Southern Tripoli is witnessing an unprecedented escalation in air strikes and shelling since the beginning of the conflict, causing dozens of civilian casualties despite international condemnation.
Each party to the conflict accuses the other of targeting civilians.
