1MDB bogey to cover Pakatan’s failure in fulfilling electoral promises

KUALA LUMPUR: Khairy Jamaluddin (Rembau-BN) told off the Pakatan Harapan government to stop using the 1Malaysia Development Berhad debts issue as a bogeyman as an excuse for the current poor economic conditions.

He accused Pakatan of trying to detract public attention from its inability to fulfill its electoral promises after 11 months on 1MDB while debating the Supplementary Supply Bill 2019.

“The government cannot manage the country which is why we won the Cameron Highlands and Semenyih by-elections,” he said, referring to PH.

“They will also lose the upcoming Rantau by-elections too,” he speculated on the by – election in the state constituency which is located in his constituency.

He also noted that the deficit budget rate rose under Pakatan to 3.9% compared to 2.4% under the BN administration after the Goods and Services Tax was replaced with Sales and Services Tax.

He added that while the government was able to annouce deflation for the first the reality on the ground was different and that the government should not be in denial.

“What about prices of goods? Do some research. Ask the rakyat if prices have dropped or not. Don’t live in denial.

“The picture given was that the abolishment of GST will reduce prices of goods. But that didn’t happen,” he said.

He also queried the government’s expenditure in the by-elections while leaving out the B40 groups in certain sectors.

“It seems that the current narrative seems to be that the country’s RM1 trillion debt was due to 1MDB. I agree there is a lot of weakness in 1MDB and I hope it can be settled.

“But to say we have no money and we have to cut all subsidies and allowance because of 1MDB, that is not true,” he said.
