18 illegals detained at Semanggol R&R

IPOH: The Perak Immigration Department detained 18 illegal immigrants during an integrated operation carried out at the Semanggol rest and service (R&R) area of the North-South Expressway yesterday.

Its director Kamalludin Ismail said those detained were among 103 immigrants of various nationalities inspected in the operation that began at 9.45 am and ended at noon.

He said those detained, aged 26 to 50, comprised seven Bangladeshis, three Myanmar nationals, three Indonesians, two Nepalese, two Indian citizens and one from Sri Lanka.

“Those arrested were on their way from Penang to Kuala Lumpur and they all claimed that they were on holiday and on the way to Kuala Lumpur visiting friends there,” he said in a statement here today.

Kamalludin said preliminary investigations found that those arrested had committed various offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 including overstaying and did not have valid documents.

He said the joint operation involved 13 Immigration officers and assisted by personnel from the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), Road Transport Department (RTD), Puspakom, Plus Malaysia Berhad and the Department of Environment (DoE).
